Summary
Yonex has launched the new 7th generation VCORE 98.
This 98-inch model has been released for players who are more competitively involved in tennis. Compared to the 100-inch model, it has reduced power, making it ideal for those who want to consistently hit spin-loaded shots into the opponent’s court.
Additionally, the controlled power makes it easier to manage, making it a must-see racquet for intermediate to advanced players.
Let’s take a closer look at this racquet.
Ground Strokes: Score 7.5/10
The YONEX VCORE98
The YONEX VCORE 98 is recommended for all players who want to attack with sharp spin shots and control. With its high spin performance and controlled power, you can consistently send the ball into your opponent’s court.
Unlike the 100-inch model, the VCORE 98 feels firmer and more demanding compared to its predecessor. In this latest VCORE 98, the string pattern has become more open, which has improved spin performance. At the same time, the stiffness of the frame has increased, making it feel less powerful than the previous version.
However, when hitting closer to the tip of the racquet, you can feel the flex and power, resulting in more penetrating shots. For groundstrokes, this model is recommended for competitive players who can consistently swing the racquet and hit the sweet spot.
Despite its high spin performance, I noticed that excessive spin caused the ball to decelerate too much. Therefore, while this racquet excels in spin, it may be better suited for players who prefer hitting flatter shots.
Volleys: Score 8.5/10
Actually, the ease of volleying was the most surprising aspect of this racket for me. Compared to the 100-inch VCORE, this 98 offers excellent control during volleys due to its reduced power.
Additionally, the new throat shape and improved frame composition help minimize frame twisting, increasing stability. Since the ball doesn’t fly off too much, it made volleys very easy to hit.
I have no complaints at all. 🙂
Serves: Score 8.5/10
Do you wanna hit massive spin or kick serve? This VCORE98 might be the best solution. The serves delivered by the VCORE 98 will be a real threat to your opponent. When you hit a spin serve with the VCORE, it’s evident that the ball bounces higher compared to normal. It’s very impressive.
Additionally, thanks to the Aero Fin technology, the racket’s excellent maneuverability allows for improved swing speed, which enhances the power of your first serve. Just like with volleys, serving with this racket is incredibly easy, leaving little to be desired.
Returns: Score 6.5/10
When it comes to returns, where a smaller swing is often necessary, this racket might feel a bit lacking. The VCORE 98 has a high stiffness and doesn’t generate much power on its own, which can result in returns landing shorter than usual. In fact, during practice, I found myself in situations where my returns were shallow, leading to more third-ball attacks and lost points than I typically experience. While this might be ideal for players who are concerned about their returns flying too far, with this racket, you’ll likely need to swing more to achieve the same depth on your shots.
Overall: Score 7.5/10
The latest VCORE 98 stands out with a more noticeable performance difference from the 100-inch model compared to its predecessor. While it’s not an overly challenging racket, it’s best suited for advanced players who can swing it confidently. The racket generates a lot of spin with any shot, but it’s important to be mindful that too much spin can cause the ball to lose speed due to excessive rotation. This racket is recommended for players who prefer to swing fully and control their shots with a flatter trajectory. Additionally, it’s highly regarded for its performance in serving and volleying, making it an excellent choice for doubles players.
